Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to urge you to take immediate and decisive action in response to the catastrophic conditions in Gaza. As hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians return north, they are finding nothing but devastation, the scale of destruction is beyond comprehension, and the humanitarian catastrophe is worsening by the day.

  • 92% of homes in Gaza have been damaged or completely destroyed.
  • Over 50 million tonnes of rubble, much of it containing hazardous materials and the decomposing bodies of thousands.
  • At least 10,000 bodies remain trapped under collapsed buildings (Palestinian Civil Defence).
  • Gaza is now a minefield: Between 5-10% of weapons fired have failed to detonate, and 24 people have already been killed by explosive ordnance since the ceasefire began (UN Mine Action Service).
  • Over 1 million children are experiencing severe psychological trauma, depression, and suicidal thoughts (UNICEF).
  • 38,000 children are orphans, and at least 13,901 women are now widows.
  • 70% of those killed in Gaza are women and children.

The total death toll is at least 77,976, but long-term indirect deaths from malnutrition, disease, homelessness, and trauma could reach at least 311,904 in the coming months and years. This does not account for those still buried under the rubble

This level of destruction is unprecedented in modern history. This is undoubtedly a campaign of extermination and genocide. Israel’s suspension of UNRWA will further exacerbate deaths and suffering, and must not be allowed to be implemented.

You have a duty to humanity to ensure accountability for these crimes. We must suspend all relations with Israel. A full arms embargo will ensure weapons manufactured in our country will not contribute to further bloodshed, nor uphold Israel’s system of apartheid (as concluded by the ICJ).

Sanctions against other states have proven effective in halting egregious human rights abuses; they must be applied here. A two-way trade embargo, and an end to all diplomatic relations with the state on trial for genocide and whose leaders are wanted war criminals at the ICC is the bare minimum.

This is a call for international law to be upheld and basic human rights for all to be protected.
