Dear [Elected Official’s Name],
I am writing to you with an urgent plea for immediate action regarding the ongoing targeted bombings of Gaza’s schools by Israeli forces. These facilities, including UNRWA schools, are currently sheltering thousands of displaced Palestinians. Nowhere is safe, and American weapons are being used in these attacks. There must be an immediate arms embargo, an urgent unconditional ceasefire, and sanctions implemented to enforce this ceasefire.
Over the past few days, Israel has deliberately attacked six UNRWA schools in Gaza. In their most recent bombing, Israel killed 23 people and injured 73. The attack on Al-Razi Middle School in the heart of the camp happened during rush hour when the streets around the overcrowded school were full of people. This must have been intentional to cause the most carnage and casualties.
“We found children beheaded and people turned into corpses and body parts inside the school, and I cannot describe the scene from the horror of the bombing,” said a man leaving the school, in a video uploaded online and verified by Al Jazeera. This atrocity underscores the urgent need for immediate action. You must demand an immediate ceasefire and press for sanctions to enforce it. The international community cannot continue to allow these war crimes to go unpunished.
A fact-checking agency, Sanad, has also verified footage of a young man carrying the remnants of rockets that targeted a school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. These rockets are American missiles, provided to Israel by the Biden administration and funded by American taxpayers. This demonstrates direct complicity, and it must end. I urge you to call for an arms embargo against Israel immediately.
Those injured in the recent school bombing have been taken to Nasser Hospital, where the floors are reportedly covered in blood, with critically injured Palestinians lying on floors awaiting any medical attention they can get. Like every other hospital in Gaza, Nasser Hospital has also been the subject of numerous Israeli attacks, including bombings and ground assaults. It is only partially functioning with very limited supplies, which will mean more Palestinians from this massacre will succumb to their injuries. The lack of medical supplies and the continuous bombardment of hospitals is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. You must push for immediate humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza without obstruction.
In the last few days alone, Israel has deliberately attacked six UNRWA schools in Gaza. These are learning spaces turned into shelters and evacuation centres for the hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians from northern Gaza, Gaza City, and more recently, from Rafah and Mawasi. Under no circumstances is it ever acceptable to bomb a school. These actions are a direct violation of international law, and it is imperative that you speak out and demand accountability. Sanctions must be imposed to ensure compliance with international norms and to protect the lives of innocent civilians.
Statistics highlight the extent of these atrocities. Nearly 7 in 10 UNRWA schools in Gaza have been hit by Israeli attacks during the genocide. Over 95% of the schools hit were being used as shelters for the displaced. This systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure is a war crime. We need your voice to call for an end to this violence and to demand justice for the victims.
The international community cannot stand idly by while these egregious war crimes continue. Words of condemnation are not enough. We need decisive action now. I urge you to demand an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, impose an arms embargo on Israel, and enforce sanctions to ensure compliance. Additionally, recognising the state of Palestine and committing to upholding the inalienable human rights of Palestinians is fundamental to brokering peace and adhering to international law.
Your immediate intervention is critical to stopping the ongoing violence and protecting innocent lives. The time for action is now.
